Learning Walk: Brush Up Your Map Reading with Alastair Clark

Over the course of this short walk we will re-visit some key map reading skills, noting key features shown on the map as we make our way round the route. This walk will give you the chance to follow the route we take on your own copy of the Ordnance Survey Explorer Map. The course will take place over a walk which sets off from the old market place in Wirksworth (next to Hope and Anchor pub) DE4 4ET

Course aim

The aim of this course is to offer you an opportunity for students to sharpen their map reading skills as we match the features we pass on the walk with features shown on our maps.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • demonstrate recognition of line features on a map and on the ground
  • describe and interpret symbols for the different types of Right of Way
  • estimate distances on the ground having identified sections of a route on a map
  • plan your own walk in the White Peak using an Ordnance Survey maps

What else do I need to know?

You need to be able to walk about 3 miles (5 kms) in hilly open country. You need to be equipped with good shoes / trainers or boots and warm waterproof jacket. You will need a recent copy of the Ordnance Survey Explorer Map (1 to 25,000) White Peak OL24
