Spring Creative Writing: Inspired by Edward Thomas and Robert Frost

Ref: C2346507

Edward Thomas (UK) and Robert Frost (US) are both poets who could be defined as ahead of their time. Their poetry exploring humanity's relationship with nature, even during wartime, outlines many ecological concerns that are still to the fore. If you're a poetry writer who uses nature in your work, or even if you'd just like to have a go at writing a poem inspired by Frost and Thomas, then come along. This course is taught by a published poet who counts both writers as a great influence on her own work. So, explore the poetic roads taken by two poets ahead of their time, and discuss what their work could mean for poets writing today.

Course aim

This course is about the early twentieth-century poets Edward Thomas and Robert Frost, and about how to use their poetry inspired by nature writing as an inspiration for work of your own.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers
  • Bring any poems you've written using themes of nature and ecology to the class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Navigate and identify poetic ideas concerning nature implicit in poems by Thomas and Frost.
  • Outline and define how to weave a poem around a single natural image - e.g. as Frost does in 'Birches'.
  • Discuss and expand upon the idea that a poem's rhythm has to suit its subject matter - and apply this to your poem.
  • Explore poems by Frost and Thomas, and identify some of their chosen techniques that may be applied when you create a poem.
  • Analyse and evaluate the idea of cutting and polishing work, which Frost encouraged Thomas to apply.

How will I be taught?

What kind of feedback can I expect?
