Art Appreciation: Henri Matisse

Ref: C2346504

Henri Matisse liberated his art from a meticulous representation of reality to free colour from its descriptive purpose, holding the radical view that the shape of things are immaterial except as fantastic vessels for colour - like balloon "they contain the airy brightness of the world". His subjects were often conventional - landscapes, portraits, nudes and interior views - but it was through his handling of bold colour and fluid draughtsmanship that Matisse secured his place as a C20th master. No previous experience is necessary - just a lively, open-minded interest in art!
