A review of some of the smaller bodies in the universe: asteroids, red and brown dwarfs, dwarf planets and dwarf galaxies. Where do these fit into the overall picture? We will also look at the stars and planets on view in the winter sky as well as space and astronomy stories in the news.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to some of the 'smaller' bodies in the universe such as dwarf planets and galaxies and low mass stars. Where do these fit into the overall picture? We will also look at the stars and planets on view in the winter sky.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explain what is meant by a 'dwarf planet' and name those in the Solar System.
  • Describe our Local Group of galaxies.
  • Carry out research into topic(s) suggested by tutor or by yourself. If you feel confident in doing so, inform others in class of findings in writing (for publication on Canvas) or verbally. (NB: Presentation of your research is NOT compulsory)
  • Explain the formation of a white dwarf
  • Explain one difference between a red dwarf and a brown dwarf
