Music All Around: How Environment Inspires Musical Composition with Mike Wheeler

Ref: C2346458

The first three sessions will look at ways in which composers have responded to city life – London, in the case of, among others, Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Holst; Paris (Gershwin, Delius and Debussy) and American cities (Copland, Sondheim, Bernstein). We shall then look at responses to different kinds of landscape. Music inspired by woods and forests includes works by Sibelius, Wagner and Bax, while Holst, Debussy and Smetana celebrate fields, meadows and heathland; Delius and Richard Strauss are among those inspired by hills and mountains. Water is central to the remaining sessions, with Liszt, Ravel and Respighi responding to fountains, Debussy, Lyadov and Mahler finding inspiration in lakes, and Beethoven, Liszt, Wagner and Ravel evoking streams and rivers.

Course aim

This course aims to explore some of the ways in which the sights and sounds of both the city and the countryside have provided inspiration for some of the most vivid and enjoyable music in the western classical tradition.
