Music in Paris: from Carmen to Les Six

Ref: C2346453

From the 1870s to the 1920s Paris was one of the dynamos of European culture, and of music in particular. Join us to explore its musical life, with works by leading French composers from Bizet and Saint-Saëns to Milhaud and Poulenc. As well as French composers we shall hear examples of music by composers who visited Paris, or who lived and worked there for significant periods, such as Stravinsky and Gershwin. Most sessions will focus on the activities of specific institutions, beginning with opera and ballet. We shall consider the work of the Paris Conservatoire; César Franck and his band of devoted followers; orchestral and chamber music societies; the salon of the Princesse Edmond de Polignac and her promotion of new music; the teacher Nadia Boulanger and her circle of colleagues and students; and visitors to Paris such as Albeniz, Stravinsky and Gershwin. The final session will look at the influence of cabaret, music-hall and jazz.
