Creative Writing - Explorations and Narratives with Deborah Tyler-Bennett

Ref: C2346445

Do you write and want to make your writing the best it can be, and would you like to work with a published author on honing your skills? This course enables you to stretch the techniques you already know, whilst learning some new ones in the company of like-minded writers. Exercises cover both poetry and prose, and analyse how you can get the most out of your chosen words. So come along, have a go at writing that expands your techniques, and helps you find your unique writing 'voice'.

Course aim

This course is for students to expand their knowledge and skills set in creative writing. Taught by a published author, it aims to stretch techniques that writers already know, whilst providing them with new ones.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers
  • New writers may learn just as much from their fellow students as from the Tutor, all welcome and a 'sharing time' in the first ten minutes of the class allows practised writers to share what they've learned.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Analyse and edit a piece of work, either in poetry or prose, exploring how this benefits from cutting and polishing.
  • Structure a poem draft, using a particular form, in this case, 'kennings'.
  • Build on rhythm used in the 'kennings' exercise, to discuss and analyse rhythmic prose.
  • Explore and expand on ideas of how to cut work, begun in outcome one, considering how major cutting and swapping benefits a piece of writing.
  • Create a list of ideas of where to send work out for publication, should you wish to do this.

How will I be taught?

What kind of feedback can I expect?

What else do I need to know?

Please bring pen, paper, and folder. Also any writing experiences/ books etc. to share with others at the beginning of the class. If you don't already do it, keep a writer's notebook, whatever form, paper or digital, this may take.
