The Sceptered Isle with Gary Slator

Ref: C2346407

The House of Plantagenet held the English throne from 1154 (with the accession of Henry II, at the end of The Anarchy crisis) to 1485. It is the origin of the dynasty, and the key reign of Henry II that established the Angevin Empire, that will form the heart of this particular course. We will look in great detail at Henry's rise to power, his acquisition of territory, and his tumultuous clash with the Latin Church and Thomas Beckett. We will go on to examine in greater detail King Henry's struggle with the French monarchy, and his efforts to maintain Angevin supremacy in France. We will also consider the important cultural influence upon England at the time. Ultimately, we will go onto consider Henry's conflict with his own sons, and the troubles of his later years. We will then conclude with an analysis the first part of Richard I's reign, his leadership in the Third Crusade, and the impact of his absence for affairs in western Europe.
