Music Appreciation: Concertos with a Difference with Nicholas Redihough

Students on this course will be able to explore a variety of different Concertos, by different composers, from different countries around the world, for a variety of different instruments, and in different musical styles from different periods in the history of music. We will start with the origins of the Concerto in the Italian Baroque and continue with a variety of different Concertos until the present day. We will listen to and evaluate a range of Concertos (solo instruments with orchestra) which represent the development of musical styles in the history of music. Students will have the opportunity to present their own recommendations, to engage with the biographies of the composers and discuss their responses to the music in its historical context, with a view to including and considering aspects of the social, political and cultural background.

Course aim

To experience a range of Concertos in a historical context in order to develop individual listening skills, through the compositions and lives of a variety of composers, including an emphasis on group discussion and learning activities.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for everyone, from beginners to advanced appreciators of music.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify at least 3 key features of different Concertos
  • Identify at least 7 different Concertos in different styles and by different composers
  • Describe, with perception and understanding and giving examples, different elements and features of music
  • Discuss my responses to music by different composers with other participants on the course and present reasons for those responses
  • Demonstrate an ability to embrace and evaluate different Concertos and recognize their cultural and historical context
