Exploring Operas by Britten, Wagner and Puccini with Nicholas Redihough

A course for everyone, from beginners to advanced opera lovers, interested in exploring Britten's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', Wagner's 'Lohengrin' and Puccini's 'Manon Lescaut'. There will be opportunities for group discussion about each opera's merits and significance. Students will learn to appreciate the music and watch the operas, using their knowledge and understanding to discuss their own responses with other students, as well as learning about the historical background to the librettos, the music and the biographies of the composers.

Course aim

To explore operas by Britten, Wagner and Puccini, appreciating the music and viewing them together, students will be able to discuss their musical and dramatic features, learn about their historical background and the biographies of the composers.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for everyone, from beginners to advanced opera lovers, interested in exploring the operas by Britten, Wagner and Puccini and discussing their merits and significance.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe at least 3 ways that my knowledge and learning have helped me to appreciate and enjoy the operas
  • Assess how each composer developed the operatic characters musically, dramatically and emotionally
  • Explain the narrative of each Libretto and its background
  • Describe 2 to 3 features of each composer's operatic style and their life biography
  • Work collaboratively in the group to discuss my responses and reactions to the music, action and production of the operas
