The Golden Age of Egypt with Gary Slator

Ref: C2346371

This course aims to chart the course of ancient Egyptian history as the first independent kings of Egypt emerged from the earlier dominion of the foreign Hyksos or "Shepherd Kings", and the successive difficulties and crises that Egypt faced during that period. We will examine the character of Egyptian kingship and society that arose during the 16th century BC, and its key features. We will also look at the development and usage of the Valley of the Kings, and the changing nature of the cult of Amun. We will also attempt to reconstruct family relationships for the kings of the early 18th dynasty, and how political and religious power may have been divided. We will assess the threat and challenges posed by the political enemies of Egypt, and try to assess the character of the middle Bronze Age diplomatic and political makeup of the Near East.

This course aims to give an insight into the history and culture of Egypt’s New Kingdom as it evolved in the middle Bronze Age, covering the 18th Dynasty and its key personalities.
