Nineteenth Century Fiction: Iconic Scenes (A course at Nottingham Mechanics)

Ref: C2346352

Cathy's ghost at the window, the creation of Frankenstein's monster, the fateful first meeting of Pip and the convict Magwich - there are moments from nineteenth century novels that we all know from adaptations, faithful and otherwise. These passages deserve a closer look, and that's the aim of this course - to move in closer and see exactly how each writer engages us as readers at these memorable moments, whether or not we know the whole work equally well. We are sure to look at the context of each - its writer's life, the time it was written, its afterlife - but the idea is to treat a few paragraphs of prose with as much care and respect for its artistry as we often give to a study of poetry.

Course aim

This course aims to focus in detail on seven well-known passages from nineteenth century fiction, treating their writers' skill in prose with the respect usually reserved for analysis of poetry.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers
  • You don't need to have read all the novels from which the scenes come, but you will benefit more from the course if you already enjoy 19th century fiction and/or costume drama.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Place each of the passages studied in its context as part of the novel to which it belongs.
  • Analyse the passage in terms of its language using some appropriate terms such as suspense, exposition, prolepsis.
  • Offer an appreciation of each passage and, where applicable, versions of the scene from other media. Why is it iconic?
  • (Optional) Devise your own creative version of the scene as parody, modernisation, artwork, etc.
  • Suggest other passages based on my own reading.

How will I be taught?

What kind of feedback can I expect?

What else do I need to know?

There is no need to bring anything. If you already have the novels concerned, that's great - but the relevant passages will be published on Canvas at the start of the course.
