The fusion of realistic depiction of the natural world with dreamlike sequences from religion and mythology created by the Pre-Raphaelite artists has long held the fascination of their audience. This lecture series will explore the different inspirations that underpin the creation of some of the world’s most recognisable images through the works of artists such as Elizabeth Siddal, Evelyn de Morgan, Robert Braithwaite Martineau and John William Inchbold, and examine how these works fitted into the art market of the day.

Course aim

This course will discuss the work of Pre-Raphaelite artists through their major themes and inspriations, and offer insights into its dissemination amongst their audience.
