"La Maupin"-too outrageous for the Three Musketeers

Ref: C2228718

A look at the short but eventful life of Julie d'Aubigney. Dumas could never have published this, her antics were just too outrageous and improbable. She had multiple pardons from the King for her various misdeeds, including burning down a convent, and many lovers of both genders, including one who paid her to go away and leave him alone. Don’t ask about the Countess and the radishes. She only lived to her 30s, but packed a lot into that time.

Course aim

An introduction to Julie d’Aubigny aka "La Maupin", a cross-dressing bisexual duellist and opera singer in 17th century France, who made the Three Musketeers look staid and boring.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify a few ways of proving that yes, a woman can and did beat a man in a duel
  • Recognise some important loopholes in French laws against duelling
  • Decide whether you want to attend the full "Amazons through the Ages" course of which this is an excerpt
  • n/a - taster session

How will I be taught?

What kind of feedback can I expect?

What else do I need to know?

You'll want to be able to see my slides, so I'd suggest a screen rather larger than a phone.
