Poetry Appreciation

Ref: C2228638

These monthly sessions encourage anyone who enjoys verse to read out poems they like, tell us why it is of significance to them, and give their critical analysis to allow other members of the group to share their reactions and comments. The first session is open to all types of poems, while the rest have specific themes chosen by the group. We prefer those attending these sessions to contribute poetry written by other people rather than their own work, as this is not intended as a creative writing course for budding poets. This course will help to improve confidence, English skills, spoken English, critical thinking and peer to peer discussions.

Course aim

This course gives students the opportunity to study, discuss and analyse poetry from many different genres. Critical commentary is embraced. It provides an opportunity for those who enjoy reading poetry out loud to do so.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Appreciate and analyse the unique properties of poetry when read out loud to a live audience, rather than being read by an individual to themselves
  • Analyse and explore topics, themes and meaning within the studied poems
  • Identify the structure of a new poem or verse
  • Discover and discuss the works of a variety of new poets.
  • Be able to participate in group and peer to peer discussions
