Russian Life and Culture during the Cold War

Ref: C2228267

What was the life of ordinary people like in the USSR during the Cold War? The Tutor, a university lecturer, born and brought up in the USSR, shares her experience and illustrates her talks with period artefacts from her family archive, video and audio materials. You will make a virtual Trans-Siberian journey, visit a typical Soviet school & attend a lesson in Russian literature. You will learn how Russian people worked, ran families, spent their free time & what they dreamed of. You will discuss Russian cuisine & fashion, Soviet art & pop culture, Russian traditions & Western influences on everyday life. The course invites you to make comparisons with the life in the UK & discuss to what extent Western myths and stereotypes reflected the Soviet reality. You will also learn some basic words in Russian. The course is supplemented with interactive activities, a Reading list & handouts, which will help you revise the material and conduct your own research.
