Course aim:
The aim of this course is to develop an understanding of what is involved in working in a school setting with children and young people.
Course description:
This is an accredited course. You will need to talk to a member of staff and do a short activity to make sure the course is right for you. For more information and to book an appointment please call 0300 303 3464 This course is aimed at anyone who is already working or volunteering in a school setting or who is wishing to volunteer or gain employment in this area. In this course you will learn about child development, safeguarding, communication and understanding the school context. You will need to build a portfolio of evidence as part of this course.
By the end of the course I will be able to:
1. Describe typical development patterns and how to recognise and react to potential development concerns
2. Understand the legislation, policies and procedures in place to safeguard the welfare of children and young people and describe the actions to take if a child or young person discloses harm or abuse
3. Explain how to develop effective professional relationships with children, young people and adults
4. Describe how legislation, policy and procedure protects from discrimination in the learning environment.
5. Identify the key characteristics of different types of schools and the roles of governors and staff
How will I learn?

We expect you to attend your classroom sessions and make time to do any required learning activities on your own.

The WEA tutor will use a range of teaching and learning activities and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning. Your tutor will use tasks to see how you are learning, which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects, discussion, written or practical work. Your tutor will give you feedback on your learning and progress.

Whether your course is face to face or online, the WEA uses its online learning area, called Canvas, to support your learning. This includes using Canvas to think about and record your progress and to give your tutor and the WEA feedback on your course.
