We will be reading Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston and The Color Purple by Alice Walker. You may wish to begin reading these texts before the course begins.
Course aim:
To explore the writing of two African American writers.
Course description:
This course will explore two significant novels of the Twentieth century by two important African American Women writers. Both texts will be read with their historical and social context in mind. Beginning with Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937) we will explore issues related to gender and racial identity. This novel greatly inspired Alice Walker and we will read her text The Color Purple (1982), considered controversial at the time of publication due to the issues raised regarding African American male and female identity.
By the end of the course I will be able to:
1. Approach literary texts in a critical way.
2. Trace connections between the two set texts.
3. Consider the significance of historical and social context on the work of Zora Neale Hurston and Alice Walker.
4. Discuss representations of African American identity in the set texts.
5. Participate in group discussion.
How will I learn?

We expect you to attend your classroom sessions and make time to do any required learning activities on your own.
