Course aim:
To provide an overview of different aspects of live in Victorian villages, including religion, education and 'high days and holidays'.
Course description:
Different Victorian villages had a character all of their own - but this lecture aims to give a sense of their day to day life through such aspects as religion, education, trade and leisure. It will consider such institutions as village schools, asking who established and funded them, and the effects (if any) of the advent of Board Schools under the 1870 Education Act. What role did religion play in village life, not only in attendance at (or absence from) church or chapel, but in the wider influence these might exert over local institutions and activities? How much leisure did the rural population enjoy, aside from traditional 'high days and holidays' such as May Day and Harvest Festivals, and did they spend as much of it in the village pubs as was often maintained? It will also look at how village shops and Post Offices operated, and draw on some written and recorded oral memoirs to get a sense of what village life was like as a Victorian child.
By the end of the course I will be able to:
1. Assess the importance of religion in the life of Victorian villages.
2. Identify some of the leisure activities of Victorian villages, and how far these differed from urban areas.
3. Give examples of the role of markets, shops and Post Offices in Victorian villages.
4. Develop your skills of critical historical analysis.
How will I learn?
