In this ten week course we will explore a selected series of “History Mysteries” which all raise intriguing issues about the interpretation of evidence and the clash of historical arguments. However they are all examined within a wider context or used to draw out some other theme which is inherent within the narrative. The themes will be selected from: The Gypsy, the Virgin and the Squire’s Daughter; The Black Hole of Calcutta; “...the cunningest Robbers in the World”; The Marie Celeste; The Mayerling Business; The Lost Lighthouse Keepers of Flannan; The Sinking of the Lusitania; The Mystery of the Disappearing Novelist; The Case of Saccho and Vanzetti; Worms, dragons and assorted virgins; I shot an arrow into the air - the death of William Rufus; The coldest march - the race to the South Pole; The battle of Flodden etc.
