This history course will look at 6 political works from Plato’s Republic to the 'Abolition of the Slave Trade' by William Wilberforce, and examine their significance at the time and their continued impact today. Using the original works, other primary sources and current interpretations, together with film and audio clips, we will seek to answer questions like, 'What is a just Society', ‘What is the proper role of Government’ and ,’Is Democracy necessarily the best form of Government’.
Course aim
This history course will look at 6 political works, the background to their production, and their influence and impact at the time. The aim is also to trace their impact through to our own times.

- This course is for beginners and improvers
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Be able to describe the significance of Plato's 'Republic' in later political thinking
- Discuss ideas put forward by Machiavelli in 'The Prince'
- Be able to describe the background to the production of the US Declaration of Independence
- Explain some of the events surrounding the abolition of the slave trade
