This course is based on the nail services National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK's leading professional bodies (The British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) and the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT)) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a junior nail technician.is a substantial vocational qualification for learners seeking a career as an employed and/or self-employed nail technician.

Additional information about this course

The aim of this qualification is to give students the skills, knowledge and qualification required to go either in to employment or self-employment as a qualified nail technician. It also gives students that are already within the sector the additional skills required to build their client base and gain additional hours or alternative employment when in a low-income job. Students complete units within health and safety, client care and communication, manicure treatments, nail enhancements and nail art. This qualification gives them all round knowledge of the nail sector. Students are also required to complete a Level 2 Award in Infection Prevention (Covid-19) for Beauty Therapy and Nail Services as a prerequisite prior to any practical work taking place.

Course aim

This qualification develops the knowledge and skills to prepare learners for employment as a junior nail technician. Learners will have their nail services skills assessed in a real working environment.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Work effectively as a nail technician
  • Apply and maintain nail enhancements to create a natural finish
  • Apply and maintain nail art services
  • Provide manicure and pedicure treatments
  • Fulfil salon reception duties including promoting additional products and services to clients

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • You will also need access to the internet outside of your sessions. You could do this using a smart phone, tablet, laptop or a desktop computer (at home or through a library etc.).
