Cake Decoration

This beginner’s course is aimed at those with little or no experience of cake decorating. You will learn, practice and develop essential beginner level skills that you need when using glace icing, butter cream and sugar paste. You will be able to assess the suitability of different types of icing for different types of cakes. You will learn how to make, prepare, colour, flavour and pipe basic buttercream patterns using piping bags and piping tips. You will learn and practice the art of splitting, filling, crumb coating using buttercream & covering sponge cakes with sugarpaste.

Course aim

This course will provide a brief introduction on how to decorate cakes using simple glace icing, butter icing and sugarpaste techniques.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the tools needed to decorate the cake.
  • Describe different cake decorating techniques
  • Use nozzles piping techniques, colour and flavour glace icing, butter icing and sugar paste.
  • To split, fill and crumb coat a 2 layer cake.
  • Cover a cake with sugar paste.

How will I be taught?

  • Zoom will be used to deliver these lessons.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
