The practical cookery course will cover following/adapting a step by step recipe each week, budgeting, cooking from raw ingredients and The Eatwell Plate/5 a day campaign.

Course aim

To give students a basic introduction to cooking a range of healthy food following and adapting recipes.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • Dietary requirements need to be communicated to the tutor before the start of the course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Follow and adapt a basic step by step recipe each week
  • State your opinion of the finished results
  • Use a variety of elements of maths (weights, measures, time, fractions, decimals)
  • Demonstrate that the recipes link to the Eatwell Plate and the 5 a day strategy

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • The cost of the ingredients need to be covered by the student, partner or project

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • Watch cookery programmes or read magazine recipes

What can I do next?

  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
  • Progress to another WEA course eg Community Health Matters
