The course encourages students to identify and develop the skills and tools needed in their role as a mentor.The legal and ethical requirements are explained in the context of mentoring and students will be supported to prepare and undertake at least one observed mentoring meeting. Feedback given and reflected on throughout the courses will enable students to evaluate their progress and performance as a mentor and create a personalised development plan to support their growth.

Course aim

This level 2 NCFE accredited course aims to prepare students for the role of a mentor by equipping them with mentoring skills and techniques.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is aimed at students who are, or are planning to become, mentors.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the role of the mentor
  • Describe what is meant by a mentoring agreement
  • Describe how good communication is essential to the role of a mentor
  • Recognise the legal and ethical requirements of mentoring
  • Undertake an assessor observed mentor meeting

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will participate in an assessor observed mentoring meeting

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • An assessor observed mentoring meeting

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to other mentoring or coaching qualifications at level 3
