Creative Writing - Be Inspired to Write (2)

This course will help develop and channel your writing ability whether for publication or as a hobby. The emphasis is on individual development. All forms are included, notably short stories, novels, plays, feature articles, writing poetry and autobiography and memoirs. We will have discussions on many aspects, such as shaping short stories, creating characters and using description. There will be short writing projects in class and readings of work in progress in a friendly and constructive setting.

Course aim

To continue to help develop and channel writing ability, through discussions of many aspects of writing, reading of students' work in a friendly and constructive setting

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • You will need your own personal email address so that you’re able to login to the WEA’s digital learning platform: WEA Canvas.   • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • The only qualification needed is a wish to enjoy and develop writing skills

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate development in writing skills
  • Write in a chosen form or variety of forms
  • Progress ability to assess your own work
  • Explain how to present work for publication, if desired

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • Suggestions for writing topics will be made and it is likely you will be writing work in progress. These are optional

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Texts and handouts will be provided during the class but audio feedback is not needed, apart from discussions during the class.

What else do I need to know?

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Although no formal pre-course reading or work is needed, it is valuable to read widely to enhance writing skills. It is likely, though optional, that you will be writing outside the class and have work in progress

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Volunteering for the WEA is fulfilling and will help the organisation continue to flourish
