This course will help to develop and channel your writing ability, whether as a hobby or for publication. We will have discussions on many aspects, such as short stories, novels, memoirs, writing poetry and feature articles. You will be invited to read your work and have feedback in a constructive and friendly setting. We will also have short writing projects in class.
Course aim
To develop and channel your writing ability whether for publication or as a hobby, with discussions of many aspects of writing, projects and reading your work in a friendly, constructive setting.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- You will need your own personal email address so that you’re able to login to the WEA’s digital learning platform: WEA Canvas. You will need to be able to understand how to follow URL links to pages on the internet. If you want to understand more about Canvas please visit: http://bit.ly/WEAonline
- This course is for a group of around 15 students studying in a live video-learning platform conference and an online digital learning environment platform from the comfort of your own home.
- No skills or experience needed
- This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
- The only qualification is an interest in enjoying and developing writing ability.
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Show development in writing ability
- Write in a chosen form or forms
- Progress ability to assess your own work
- Know how to present work for publication, if desired.
How will I be taught?
- The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course. - The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
- You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
- Additional work is optional but recommended
What kind of feedback can I expect?
- You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
- You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
- You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
- Written text will be provided but audio feedback, apart from discussion in class, is not needed. There will be suggested tasks to do in your own time, which also are optional. Work in progress will he discussed.
What else do I need to know?

Pre-course work, reading and information sources
- No pre reading or pre course work is required
- Reading widely is always desirable to develop writing as is work in progress to discuss though you do not need to provide this. The Writers' and Artists' Yearbook is invaluable for those wishing to be published
