We all have a responsibility to keep children safe. Safeguarding training ensures than volunteers can offer children a safe space to interact, learn and grow. This course will focus on recognising and responding to concerns of the maltreatment of children and develop understanding some other dangers, such as the internet and domestic violence.

Working in partnership with East Surrey College. This course is for residents living in East Surrey in boroughs of Tandridge, Banstead and Reigate, Epsom and Ewell and Mole Valley
Course aim
This workshop is for volunteers working with children. It provides an introduction to safeguarding principles, how to recognise the signs of abuse and neglect and what duties volunteers have with regards to reporting safeguarding concerns.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?

- This course is for a group of around 15 students studying in a live video-learning platform conference and an online digital learning environment platform from the comfort of your own home.

By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Explain what is meant by the terms 'safeguarding' and 'child protection’.
- Name and identify the potential indicators of child maltreatment.
- Understand impact of parent carer mental and physical health on a child, including domestic violence.
- Have a clear understanding of what responsibilities volunteers have regarding safeguarding.
How will I be taught?
- The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course. - The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
What kind of feedback can I expect?
- A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
- You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
- You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
