This yoga course is designed to help: - your mental health including anxiety, stress and mild depression - lower your risk of diabetes type 2 - lose and control your weight - lower your risk of heart disease and improve your heart health - improve your breathing and lung capacity - become more active and less sedentary - connect with others Each 1.5 hour class comprises: Yoga postures within your safe limits Breathing practices Relaxation Discussion This course is educational and experiential. You will find postures to soothe you and also build strength and flexibility, improve mobility and balance.

Course aim

A gentle introduction to yoga, where we build week on week, in a friendly environment. Mat or chair based yoga accessible for everyone. Learn and practice long-lasting body and breath work that increases health and wellbeing over 12 weeks.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • You will need your own personal email address so that you’re able to login to the WEA’s digital learning platform: WEA Canvas.   • This course is for a group of around 15 students studying in a live video-learning platform conference and an online digital learning environment platform from the comfort of your own home.

  • This course is for beginners
  • Students need a level 2 qualification in English to join this course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Feel more physically grounded, especially in my feet. Waking up our feet helps us feel our spine and increases our flexibility.
  • Connect with others.
  • Improve my balance, coordination and strength giving me greater focus and helping to prevent falls.
  • Acquire breathing techniques that reduce stress levels and know how we breathe can affect our mental state.
  • A clearer knowledge in how to help myself, more motivated to continue exercising regularly.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be able to keep a digital portfolio of your work on WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas.
  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • What you need: You will need an internet connection, speakers, a microphone and a webcam so that you can use our video learning platform, Zoom. If you’d like to understand more Zoom please visit: http://bit.ly/ZoomSpec
  • You will also need access to the internet outside of your sessions. You could do this using a smart phone, tablet, laptop or a desktop computer (at home or through a library etc.).
  • You will need a personal email address to join the WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas so that you can receive resources, record your progress and achievement and to work with others and share ideas.   • Wear loose comfortable clothing. Purchase a non-slip mat, enabling you to balance, lie down and get up and down off the floor comfortably. Also a blanket (optional) is useful for extra support (eg under knees) and to stay warm for quiet breathing. Ensure the room is clear enough to move in.
