Black Women Writers - Poetry

This course looks at the strength of poetic tradition in the work of black women writers. We will explore the links between social activism and poetry written by black women in the UK and America and their vital contribution to civil rights, anti-racist and feminist campaigns. We will ask questions about why poetry is often not featured on black women's writing courses and what this tells us about literary genres, erasure, racism and privilege. The course will also offer a grounding in critical race and feminist theory. We will also look at current activist campaigns including Black Lives Matter. The module will include work by Maya Angelou, Audre Lorde, Alice Walker, Belle Hooks, Patience Agbabi and Yrsa Daley Ward.

Course aim

This course provides an introduction to the poetry of six black women writers (four American authors and two British). We will explore texts produced in the early twentieth century and finish with the work of contemporary poets.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • It would be helpful for students to have previous experience of studying literature and social history. A good level of written and spoken English is needed for full participation.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • To list key dates and key biographical information on studied authors
  • Be able to close read poems within a class test without using extra materials
  • Use creative learning methodologies and exercises to produce alternative perspectives on course content
  • Be able to list up to five different types of poetic technique or form
  • Have selected work by two authors on the course for potential further study (where appropriate)

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Students may wish to keep a course journal to record session ideas and progress

What else do I need to know?

  • What you need: You will need an internet connection, speakers, a microphone and a webcam so that you can use our video learning platform, Zoom. If you’d like to understand more Zoom please visit: http://bit.ly/ZoomSpec
  • You will also need access to the internet outside of your sessions. You could do this using a smart phone, tablet, laptop or a desktop computer (at home or through a library etc.).
