How to Support People living with Dementia (East Surrey)

In this course we will look at the different types of dementia and how to distinguish these from other conditions. We will explore what it feels like for someone with dementia and consider the legislation in place to support and protect those with dementia. In terms of practical strategies, we will identify the changes we can make to the environment to enhance orientation and independence and how to support effective communication and minimise distress for someone living with dementia.

Working in partnership with East Surrey College to deliver community learning. This course is only for people living in East Surrey in Caterham, Tandridge, Reigate & Banstead, Epsom and Ewell and Mole Valley districts

Course aim

In this course we will look at the different types of dementia and practical strategies to help understand and support someone living with dementia to maintain their independence.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Useful to those living with and/or caring for someone with memory problems.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the different types and form dementia takes and how to distinguish this from other conditions.
  • Explain how someone with dementia might feel and experience the world around them.
  • Identify and use communication strategies for interacting more effectively with someone with dementia.
  • Identify environmental changes to help someone with dementia to be more oriented and independent in their daily activities.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
