Functional Skills Maths (Entry 2)

On this Open Awards courses you will learn to use maths skills with and without a calculator. Examples of the types of skills you will develop include being able to : count reliably up to 100 items, read, write, order and compare numbers up to 200, recognise and sequence odd and even numbers up to 100, use metric measures of length including millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres, use measures of weight including grams and kilogrammes, recognise and name 2-D and 3-D shapes including pentagons, hexagons, cylinders, cuboids, pyramids and spheres, extract information from lists, tables, diagrams and bar charts and make numerical comparisons from bar charts

Course aim

The Open Awards will teach you mathematics skills that you can use in daily life. It will help you to progress to the Entry Level 3 Functional Skills in maths. It could help you get a job or be a volunteer in the future.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • All students are checked to ensure they are ready for this course or will have an Entry 1 qualification. This is a beginners course helping to develop basic maths skills for at those returning to math’s learning. It will help students to work towards higher Maths qualifications including GCSEs

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use the knowledge and skills to recognise a simple problem and obtain a solution
  • Develop basic number use and simple calculations
  • Improve use of common measures
  • Build recognition and use of shape and space
  • Improve organisation of information and data

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
