Ancient Egyptian civilization endured for three millennia. This course will trace the emergence of dynastic Egypt, examine the development of the iconic Giza pyramids, journey through the cultural peak of the Middle Kingdom and then the Egypt of Tutankhamun and Ramesses the Great in the New Kingdom.

Course aim

This course aims to introduce the history, religion, monumental architecture and writings of the ancient Egyptians, to explore the fundamentals of their history and society and discover why their civilization was so successful.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for a group of around 15 students studying in a live video-learning platform conference and an online digital learning environment platform from the comfort of your own home.
  • This is a live lecture delivered by a subject specialist in an online webinar video learning platform. You will need to be able to access the internet on a device with speakers or earphones.   • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the nature and importance of the relationship between the Egyptian civilization and its physical environment
  • List selected major periods ancient Egyptian history
  • Discuss the possible construction process for the pyramids at Giza
  • Outline the circumstances that gave rise to the reign of the female pharaoh Hatshepsut

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • The sessions will comprise well illustrated presentations with the opportunity for discussion and questions.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Ongoing, informal, there will be an short optional and anonymous zoom quiz at the start of most sessions.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • If time allows reading any introductory book will be helpful e.g. Salima Ikram's An Introduction to Ancient Egypt.
