Iconic Architecture of Spain-Islamic,Romanesque,Gothic&Gaudi - Guildford Branch

We will include Roman work in Iberia and the architecture of Islamic rule in southern Spain, including Cordoba and Granada, and the Romanesque architecture of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela. Gothic architecture includes the magnificent cathedrals of Toledo and Seville - and we will dip into Spain's Renaissance and Baroque period. Gaudi's unique contribution to architecture will be followed by a look at the modern work, both of Spanish architects plus work by world architects such as Frank Gehry's celebrated Guggenheim in Bilbao.

Course aim

An overview of the architecture of Spain, looking at some of the most outstanding buildings in its history.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • relate broad architectural styles to the principal periods of the history of Spain
  • identify some architectural styles which are particular to Spain
  • link architecture to the history of the development of Spain as a nation state

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • Useful background reading - David Watkin - A History of Western Architecture - Laurence King - Spain in chapters 4, 5, 6, 7 and 10.
