This course explores the rich history and culture of Russia. It studies how Russia's artistic, design and engineering expertise was engaged by Stalin, together with unlimited human and material resources, to produce the world's most famous and most palatial Metro systems. We review how the 20th century became a turbulent period for Russia with revolution, civil war, two world wars and 7 decades of Bolshevik suppression. Radical changes yielded a harvest of creative excellence in fine art and design with a unique range of new art movements and architectural styles. By the 1930's, having gained the power of an absolute dictator, Stalin conceived the idea of building a Metro system beyond compare. This was to be a show-case for Communism and a shining legacy from his own "enlightened" rule. The resulting Metros of Moscow and St Petersburg are vast icons of style, décor and scale, still rapidly expanding and essential elements in the transport infrastructure of these congested cities.

Course aim

To explore the 20th century art and architecture of Moscow and St Petersburg as evidenced in the design and decor of their magnificent Metro systems, embracing both the splendour of the past imperial culture and the Soviet propaganda of the 20th c.
