Families Get Active - Active Science, is a course involving fun and practical science activities suitable for the family and using materials often found in the home, or obtained with nominal cost. It will involve the exploration of colours, solutions and interactions,as well as information and research around science in the real world. For example - known as STEM which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths it may include food science - industrial science, sports science, environmental science, and computer or digital science.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is meant to be interactive, fun and informative for families to learn together.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • set up my own fun and interactive Active Science experiments to explore the world of science with my family.
  • Explore colours, solutions and interactions in a safety conscious manner.
  • participate in group discussions online via Zoom.
  • share ideas and take away ideas for future Active Science activities with the family.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • What you need: You will need an internet connection, speakers, a microphone and a webcam so that you can use our video learning platform, Zoom. If you’d like to understand more Zoom please visit: http://bit.ly/ZoomSpec
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • We will be doing some practical activities so you may wish to have a selection of the following items: A4 paper, Kitchen roll or Coffee filters. Felt tip pens & a biro A clear jar or glass Eggs & white vinegar Skittles or smarties A white plate Food labels or cans, boxes and jars.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Nothing essential but you may have an advantage if you read about simple home science experiments. Also a basic understanding of recycling methods would be useful.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation

As a registered charity, and to meet our funders’ requirements, we need to check a few things with you before you enrol. Please check the details below to ensure you meet the basic eligibility critiera:

  • You are paying the standard fee (with a credit or debit card) or you are on any of the qualifying benefits
  • You have a valid email address so that you can receive confirmation of your booking
  • You have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2020
  • You declare that the address you provide is correct and that you will provide evidence of this and your eligibility to live and work in the UK
