Renaissance Art

Come and discuss Italian Renaissance art in this informal, welcoming, online course. Talk to other students and develop your understanding and appreciation of this much revered aspect of art history through the perspective of the politics, religion and identities of independent Italian states. The development of art and art patronage within distinct areas, against this backdrop will be considered, alongside the influence of wider cultural and intellectual interchange. As well as looking into the significance of areas like Rome and Florence in the development of Renaissance art, we will also consider regions such as Mantua and Urbino. We will further explore select artworks and artists from household names like Leonardo da Vinci, to those whom history let fade, such as Piero di Cosimo. We will thus explore artistic characteristics, both within and across states, with comparisons and contrasts and identify wider influences which affect creators and the appearance of their artworks.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to appreciating Renaissance art and its development, from the point of view of independent city states and identities in Italy and the impact of cultural interchange across territories.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify social and political changes within individual Italian regions and consider how such changes contributed to developments in art, both regionally and more broadly
  • Discuss the relationship between at least three major Italian Renaissance art patrons and three producers and explain how such relationships impacted both on individual works of art and on reputations
  • Discuss the development of specific art ideas, materials and techniques both regionally and via wider dissemination and identify at least three approaches which remained largely region-specific
  • Compare and contrast art from at least three different areas of Italy at similar times within the Renaissance
  • Participate in constructive discussions with other students online, comparing interpretations and opinions, to greater understand works of art, their contexts and what they represent

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
