Painting Practice

This is a flexible learning online course designed for self directed learners who wish to continue their painting practice in their home environment and receive feedback and advice from their tutor regarding their progress. The course is set out as a series of instruction and assignments for students to work through at their own pace. During the course we will look at Chiaroscuro, Grisaille Painting and project themes exploring the notions of "Art as Escapism, Nature as Solace" and "Life in the Time of Covid". Throughout the course students will receive written feedback in relation to uploaded images of their works, advice and instruction for works in progress, as well as the opportunity to upload their works for discussion and feedback from their peers.

Course aim

The purpose of this course is to enable students to continue their Painting Practice from home and receive feedback and advice from their tutor regarding their progress.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • You will need your own personal email address so that you’re able to login to the WEA’s digital learning platform: WEA Canvas.   • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate how I can use Chiaroscuro with good effect for my painting and drawing
  • Demonstrate how I can use Grisaille painting with my own choice of drawing and painting media
  • Create works of art in relation to suggested themes and subject matter
  • Engage in learning online and actively participate in my artistic development through use of the WEA Canvas learning platform
  • Interact with other group members through discussion via the WEA Canvas learning platform

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Your tutor will provide written, text and audio feedback recorded in WEA Canvas, WEA’s digital learning platform.
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A range of your own art materials and a space for you to work on your artistic pieces

  • Attendance of previous terms for the current academic year is desirable
