Long Hairstyling Techniques for Beginners

This course is aimed at anyone who has an interest in or wishes to recap on a variety of long hairstyling techniques. You will be introduced to the history of hairstyling throughout the ages. This will then lead you into live demonstrations and online videos showing you a variety of step by step plaiting techniques. You will have an oportunity to produce these styles on your own live model within your own home and share your progress and development. There will be group chats and discussions with other students interested in sharing their own thoughts and ideas and looking at different hairstyles for different occassions. This would be an ideal start for anyone interested in developing skills for occasion hair such as weddings or for a more simple use such as creating looks for family members including children's styles.This course may lead onto more advanced courses for those who wish to develop further.

Course aim

Designed for beginners interested in learning a variety of long hairstyling techniques. This course can lead to more advanced skills and techniques with further online training.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • You will need your own personal email address so that you’re able to login to the WEA’s digital learning platform: WEA Canvas.   • This course is for a group of around 15 students studying in a live video-learning platform conference and an online digital learning environment platform from the comfort of your own home.
  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • perform at least 3 different plaiting techniques.
  • identify a variety of hairstyles from the past and perhaps recreate or adapt them for a modern day style.
  • incorporate up to 3 different plaits to create one hairstyle.
  • research and discuss how different hairstyles might be used for a variety of occasions
  • develop research skills, digital skills and communication skills by use of the internet and through group discussions.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • For practical development you should practise practical activities in your own time.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be able to keep a record of your progress and achievement using photos, audio, text or documents uploaded into the WEA’s digital learning platform, WEA Canvas.
  • Your tutor will provide written, text and audio feedback recorded in WEA Canvas, WEA’s digital learning platform.
  • You will be able to keep a digital portfolio of your work on WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas.
  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • You will be encouraged to upload images/videos of your work onto Canvas for reflection and tutor feedback. You may also wish to keep a record of your own practical work for your personal records.

What else do I need to know?

  • What you need: You will need an internet connection, speakers, a microphone and a webcam so that you can use our video learning platform, Zoom. If you’d like to understand more Zoom please visit: http://bit.ly/ZoomSpec
  • You will also need access to the internet outside of your sessions. You could do this using a smart phone, tablet, laptop or a desktop computer (at home or through a library etc.).
  • You will need a personal email address to join the WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas so that you can receive resources, record your progress and achievement and to work with others and share ideas.   • This course uses minimal equipment but you will need a hairbrush and hair bobbles. You may wish to incorporate other hair accessories but this is not essential for this course.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • This is a practical course and as such doesn't require any pre reading. There are however a good number of images and videos on the internet and youtube to help with creative ideas for different hairstyles you may wish to try or aim to achieve with more advanced training.
