Learn how to hand model a range of semi realistic sugar dogs in various positions. Upright and sitting and dressed in jackets or additional fun accessories.

Course aim

Using a cocoa butter based modelling paste form a range of semi detailed sugar dogs, suitable as cake toppers or decorations.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is aimed at students who have some experience of sugarpaste modelling, however the techniques can be simplified for a student who is new to modelling but enjoys the challenge of shaping more complex pieces.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Colour, store and recognise the working and blending properties of a cocoa butter based slow drying modelling medium ( Saracino Pasta Model)
  • Work with edible and non edible internal structure to form basic shapes of the dogs' bodies
  • Create at least 3 different fur textures using a range a common sugarpaste modelling tools
  • Construct at least one sitting dog and one standing dog
  • Dress the dogs in jackets or create own personalised accessories to fit the theme

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Paced ,interactive pre recorded video will be used to demonstrate the dog making process, step by step. To simplify the more advanced detail students with less experience will be encourage to reposition the body shapes or add less detail.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Your tutor will provide written, text and audio feedback recorded in WEA Canvas, WEA’s digital learning platform.
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A range of specific modelling tools and a slow drying modelling paste will be required for this course. The list will be posted on Canvas prior to the class starting. Please just bring 200g modelling paste ( any colour) to the first session to practice some basic dog body shapes.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
