Miss Havisham plans revenge on all men. Strong women stand up for themselves: Jane Eyre, Maggie Hobson, Juliet Capulet. Consider how the actions of individuals affect the well-being of others. Dip into some classics and discuss life!

Course aim

To explore how writers stir emotion in the reader. To explore individual characters fighting for their own values and identity against a society that would judge them by rules of their culture.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • You will need your own personal email address so that you’re able to login to the WEA’s digital learning platform: WEA Canvas.   • This course is for a group of around 15 students studying in a live video-learning platform conference and an online digital learning environment platform from the comfort of your own home.
  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Write emotionally in role as a character
  • Discuss the problems caused when people use their power irresponsibly
  • Create an in-depth character with values, a life-purpose and a weakness
  • Understand the influence of society on relationships
  • Explore women who defied the culture of their time.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • You will have the chance to continue discussion through Canvas. Text extracts, poetry and scripts will be used.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • You will be able to keep a record of your progress, creating a Learning Log on Canvas.

What else do I need to know?

  • Supporting resources will be available in Canvas.
