In this course you will create sugar roses using flower paste. Each rose will be wired and in various stages of growth. You will learn the making process from start to finish, including the leaves Create a professional style display suitable for celebration cakes and as a freestanding display piece. Detailed step by step written and visual instructions will be available via the online platform Canvas.

Course aim

To learn how to make realistic wired sugar roses in various stages of growth. From bud to fully blown. Additionally learn how to create the rose leaves to enhance the display.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Learn how to, store, colour and work with a variety of sugar flower pastes ( gum pastes)
  • Practice step by step cutting, shaping and drying a sugar rose and rose leaves
  • Construct a rose from bud to fully blown
  • Practice the techniques of colouring, dusting and steaming petals and leaves
  • Construct taped stems and wired sections together to create a natural looking spray or arrangement

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be able to keep a record of your progress and achievement using photos, audio, text or documents uploaded into the WEA’s digital learning platform, WEA Canvas.
  • Your tutor will provide written, text and audio feedback recorded in WEA Canvas, WEA’s digital learning platform.
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A range of flower making cutters , tools equipment will be required to complete this course. This list will be published on Canvas before the class starts. To practice a basic sugarpaste rose in the first session please have ready 200g modelling paste and a A4 plastic wallet.
