Italian Improvers (York)

This is an ongoing course. It is aimed at people who have already studied Italian for at least one year and have a basic knowledge of the Italian language, but keen to develop it further. The course will focus on oral, listening and speaking skills, but also reading and writing, so that the student will be able to communicate effectively. Being focused on communicative skills, an active participation during the classes will be encouraged. Each term will cover a different topic designed to broaden the learner's understanding of Italian society, culture and lifestyle. Some knowledge of the Italian language is required (see the section "Pre-course work"). Course aim

This is an ongoing course. It will enable you to develop language skills and will equip you with the confidence and appropriate knowledge to communicate in and understand Italian

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • You will need your own personal email address so that you’re able to login to the WEA’s digital learning platform: WEA Canvas.   • This course is for a group of around 15 students studying in a live video-learning platform conference and an online digital learning environment platform from the comfort of your own home.
  • Being an ongoing course, the present tense, the passato prossimo, articles, prepositions and other things have been already covered. If you are joining the class this year you need to know all of these things. If you want to check your level, ask the WEA to put you in contact with the tutor.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use the imperfetto to talk about my memories and my habits in the past
  • Talk about a few Italian regions (traditions, food, places to go)
  • Demonstrate how to solve common difficult situations that could happen while on holiday in Italy
  • Demonstrate an understanding of simple written material in Italian
  • Demonstrate an understanding of simple spoken material in Italian

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Sessions in this course are dynamic and engaging. You will be asked o speak in Italian and to take part in games and activities with your fellow students.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • What you need: You will need an internet connection, speakers, a microphone and a webcam so that you can use our video learning platform, Zoom. If you’d like to understand more Zoom please visit: http://bit.ly/ZoomSpec
  • You will also need access to the internet outside of your sessions. You could do this using a smart phone, tablet, laptop or a desktop computer (at home or through a library etc.).

As a registered charity, and to meet our funders’ requirements, we need to check a few things with you before you enrol. Please check the details below to ensure you meet the basic eligibility critiera:

  • You are paying the standard fee (with a credit or debit card) or you are on any of the qualifying benefits
  • You have a valid email address so that you can receive confirmation of your booking
  • You have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2020
