This is a yoga class based on the traditional form of yoga from the Sivananda lineage. The teaching lineage of the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres can be traced back many hundreds of years to the great sage Adi Sankaracharya who unified the diverse spiritual practices prevalent at the time into a cohesive system. The teachings have been passed from guru to disciple in an unbroken chain to the present day. We will be looking at the 5 points points of yoga which include: Proper Breathing, Proper Exercise, Proper Relaxation, Proper Diet, Positive Thinking & Meditation. This course is a fully online with no physical meeting space, accessing the course through Canvas our virtual learning environment and zoom a video conferencing software.

Course aim

A mixed class combining pranayama (breathing techniques), asanas (yoga postures) and relaxation techniques.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • You will need your own personal email address so that you’re able to login to the WEA’s digital learning platform: WEA Canvas.   • This course is for a group of around 15 students studying in a live video-learning platform conference and an online digital learning environment platform from the comfort of your own home.
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Connect my breath with the movement of at least one posture.
  • know what trikonasana is and how to do it.
  • know what the 5 points of yoga are.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • The tutor will guide you through a yoga sequence for you to follow.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • The tutor will guide you through a yoga sequence for you to follow and will give feedback as necessary during the class. There will be time at the beginning and end to ask questions.

What else do I need to know?

  • You will need a yoga mat and blanket, a belt or scarf and a cushion can also be helpful to get into postures.
