From memory loss to stress intolerance, from depression to mood swings; we now understand there is an integral connection between gut health and brain health. Learn some effective dietary strategies for improving mental health, and explore some basic principles of how 'what you eat' affects the 'way you feel'. This course will look at a few key elements in the science of nutrition and how it might affect mental health, and will discuss the importance of lifestyle choices to our overall health. This course is a taster session that can lead to the course 'Weight-loss that stays lost', where much more detail can be discovered about how dietary choices can affect our health. This course is a fully online with no physical meeting space, accessing the course through Canvas our virtual learning environment and zoom a video conferencing software.
Course aim
This simple taster course provides a brief introduction to the connection between diet and mental health. We will cover some basic nutrition/lifestyle science as well as looking at how to apply a few changes to lifestyle to improve mental health.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?

- This course is for a group of around 15 students studying in a live video-learning platform conference and an online digital learning environment platform from the comfort of your own home.

- The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course. What kind of feedback can I expect?
- You will be able to keep a record of your progress and achievement using photos, audio, text or documents uploaded into the WEA’s digital learning platform, WEA Canvas.
- A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
- You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
What else do I need to know?

- You will also need access to the internet outside of your sessions. You could do this using a smart phone, tablet, laptop or a desktop computer (at home or through a library etc.).
