Modern Art - love it or loathe it? Tate Modern is one of the most visited attractions in Britain, but how many people understand the contexts and movements which drove artistic development in the twentieth century? From Picasso to Tracy Emin and from Henry Moore to Anthony Gormley we examine the main trends in modern art and ask why it arouses such strong feelings. This course is a fully online with no physical meeting space, accessing the course through Canvas our virtual learning environment and zoom a video conferencing software.
Course aim
Why does modern art arouse such strong feelings? What is it trying to achieve. This course is an exploration of the main artistic themes and characters of twentieth century art.

By the end of the course I should be able to:
- identify the main movements on modern art
- describe the achievements of the most important twentieth century artists
- understand the contexts which gave rise to modern art themes.
How will I be taught?
- The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
What kind of feedback can I expect?
- A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
