This course will introduce some principles of pattern cutting and construction. You will learn to take a pattern from a favourite garment or start from a basic commercial pattern. You can learn various techniques to create styles and shapes whilst also learning the importance of adding detail to your garments. The aim of this course is to create and adapt your own patterns. If you have a basic knowledge of sewing and patterns and would like to use your sewing machine more to develop your skills further then this course is for you! This course is a fully online with no physical meeting space, accessing the course through Canvas our virtual learning environment and zoom a video conferencing software.

Course aim

An introduction into some pattern cutting and sewing techniques that students can use to adapt or create their own garments.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • You will need your own personal email address so that you’re able to login to the WEA’s digital learning platform: WEA Canvas.   • This course is for a group of around 15 students studying in a live video-learning platform conference and an online digital learning environment platform from the comfort of your own home.
  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • learn to make a pattern from your favourite garment.
  • learn some pattern cutting techniques
  • learn some sewing techniques.
  • learn to adapt a garment
  • get used to learning online using zoom and canvas

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • paper, ruler, pencils pattern cutting set square or pattern master is useful sewing machine basic sewing kit
