Would you like to feel more confident to help your child to read in English? Would you like to feel more confident with phonics? Do you want to improve your own English at the same time? This taster session will cover elements of story telling, introducing a new book, practising phonics and word attack skills and lots more. The class will be friendly and relaxed and we will also focus on improving your reading and speaking.
Course aim
To build confidence and skills in helping your child to read in English, whilst improving your own English skills at the same time.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?

- This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
- This course is suitable for parents (or potential parents) and carers who have at least the basics of reading and who are not confident with current reading techniques used in schools.
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Read a children’s book aloud in English using expression and techniques for engaging the child in the story
- Use phonics to blend and segment words and guide a child to do so
- Feel more confident reading to a child
How will I be taught?
- The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course. - The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
- You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
What kind of feedback can I expect?
- You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
- A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
- There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

- A pen and a notebook.
