This course is fully online accessing the course through Canvas our virtual learning environment and zoom a video conferencing software. You will need, reliable internet connection and internet-linked device with camera and microphone. We will be email you links to canvas, please accept these to access the course, the sender will show as “instructure”. Discover one of the hidden histories of Egypt after the pharaohs of the New Kingdom. After centuries of division during the Third Intermediate Period it was the Nubian pharaoh Piye from modern-day Sudan that re-unified Egypt ruling both Egypt and Nubia in a period now known as the Twenty-fifth dynasty. This course traces the art, history, tomb and temple building of this fascinating dynasty exploring the artistic renaissance and archaism alongside the political and military challenges that brought the dynasty to a perhaps premature close.

Course aim

This course aims to introduce the 25th Dynasty of ancient Egypt, a fascinating period when the Nubian pharaohs of Sudan reunified and ruled Egypt.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for a group of around 15 students studying in a live video-learning platform conference and an online digital learning environment platform from the comfort of your own home.

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss the contents of the Piye victory stela
  • Briefly describe a monumental tomb from the Twenty-Fifth Dynasty
  • Outline briefly the main points of Taharqa's stelae from Kawa
  • Discuss the suggested order of the pharaohs Shabaqa and Shibitqo

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • The sessions will include well-illustrated presentations supported with specific texts and with lots of opportunity for questions and discussions

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Ongoing informal feedback. There will be an optional, short and anonymous zoom quiz at the start of most sessions to recall the previous weeks study.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Students new to the subject would benefit from reading an overall Introduction to Ancient Egypt. All students would gain from reading chapters or books on the specific period covered.
