UK History for Citizenship

To become a UK citizen, you need to pass the “Life in the UK” test. This course will introduce some of the key history from early Britain, through the middle ages, until modern Britain. This course is loosely based on the Home Office’s book "Life in the United Kingdom - A guide for new residents”. There’s a lot of fascinating history to learn about.

Course aim

By the end of the course, learners will have a better understanding of some of the periods in history mentioned in the preparation book for the Life in the UK citizenship test.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • You will need your own personal email address so that you’re able to login to the WEA’s digital learning platform: WEA Canvas. By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • have a better understanding of British History
  • be better able to talk about history
  • understand and use some key history vocabulary
  • compare and contrast U.K. history other countries

  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • zoom live sesssions

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • feedback on speaking from the tutor during class. feedback on writing from your tutor.

What else do I need to know?

This course is funded by the West of England Combined Authority but is also open to residents of other areas.

As a registered charity, and to meet our funders’ requirements, we need to check a few things with you before you enrol. Please check the details below to ensure you meet the basic eligibility critiera:

  • You are paying the standard fee (with a credit or debit card) or you are on any of the qualifying benefits
  • You have a valid email address so that you can receive confirmation of your booking
  • You have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2020
